WWYD With WhITelion – Issue 1

This is the WWYD column, in which you will rack your brains out trying to figure out the best discard choice for a fictional hand!

For the first issue, we will start off with 3 simple problems, taken from 麻雀 傑作「何切る」300選 (Maajan kessaku [Nanikiru] 300-sen) by G Uzaku.

Let’s look at the three very similar hands below:

1) East 1 – West seat – 7th turn – Dora:

Now that you are here, let’s go through the answers for each question one by one:

1) East 1 – West seat – 7th turn – Dora:

Answer:

You should pay attention to the possibility of calling to achieve tenpai with this hand. The tiles that give the highest ukeire are  and , but in case you get to fill in a triplet, the  will give you a boost in fu (Example: If you has a triplet of the with this shape…

… You will get 20+8+2+2=32 fu on a tsumo win).

Remember that if you draw  as a winning tile with the shape below, it is completing the  closed wait for an extra 2 fu, for a total of: 20+8+2+2=32 fu.

 

2) East 1 – West seat – 7th turn – Dora: 

Answer:

You should try to avoid losing the potential for ryanpeikou and chiitoitsu here, even though you lose 1 ukeire when compared to playing .

3) East 1 – West seat – 7th turn – Dora: 

 
Answer:

You are able to aim for sanankou with this hand. Discard  if you want to be able to utilize  in the future, or discard  if you want to keep the  as a safe tile to be used later.


Three similar hands, with three very different answers. They don’t look very similar now, do they?
